Course Description:
Whether Ella Fitzgerald or Diana Krall, almost everyone knows of a famous woman
jazz singer. And many male instrumentalists are also very well known. But women
composers, pianists, saxophonists, etc., have been underappreciated for many decades.
This six class course surveys the music of 30 top female jazz instrumentalists through
the various styles of jazz from the 1940s to the present by viewing videos of their
live performances. Biographical information and comments on each musician's
contributions to jazz will be provided. Audience discussion is encouraged.
